Sibylla Nash is a Los Angeles-based author. Her work has appeared in a variety of outlets including Essence, Newsweek, The Chicago Tribune, and many others.

She is the recipient of the Kit Reed Travel Fund and was a writing resident at Joya Aire in Spain. She received her BA in journalism from the University of Southern California and her MFA in Creative Writing from Otis College of Art and Design.

Now that the world is reopening again, book festivals are back. Back in a big way. The LA Times Festival of Books kicks off next month. I'm definitely heading over to check it out. I'll also be vending at the Bay Area Book Festival. I never attended this festival before, so super excited to go! Have you ever done something once successfully and then forgot how to do it? Me too! It’s such a time suck when you try to do it again and can’t.

I’ve been revising my manuscript, and I didn’t think I would use Google docs as much as I do… but it’s perfect when working in a critique group for getting feedback on your work. Once I had the comments, I wanted to import them to Scrivener so I could revise the pages on that platform. Cutting and pasting didn’t work and then I tried downloading the doc but I still didn’t see the comments.

At one point, I was able to import some pages from Google docs into Scrivener and the comments transferred over perfectly! And then I couldn’t remember how I did it. And I couldn’t find the answer on my go-to guy – Google. After spending way too much time, I was able to do it again. There may be an easier way, but this is what I did.

1. Exported my Google Doc as an MS Word file.

2. Opened the doc in Word and went to Tools/Track Changes. I clicked all four boxes to track changes. Then I made sure to click on “Comments” in the upper right-hand corner. I was then able to see the comments from Google in the Word document.

\"\" — 3. I then opened my project in Scriver and went to File/Import/Files. I imported my newly saved MS Word file and voila, the comments from Google appeared in the comments and notes sidebar in Scrivener.

What is Plottr

$\"Plottr$

So, you have a story. Better yet, you completed the first draft and happily typed ‘The End.’ You know it’s not really the end, though. Now comes the fun part, rather, the pulling out your hair and swearing as you wrangle that bad boy into something that sizzles on the page—a story with heart that keeps the reader reading. The process of revising your story from discombobulated, cliche riddled first draft to bestselling-I-can-retire final draft (a girl can wish, right?).

There are a ton of software apps available to help you focus, organize your work, and if you write screenplays, format them. The latest entry is Plottr. Plottr is a software app for well, plotting. Priced at $25 for life with one year of updates and an optional $25/yr for renewals, the software has a customizable timeline feature, outline, templates for characters, and places, with the ability to create tags and more. So much more. I purchased it almost two months ago, and during that time, the developers have made many improvements, some of which are taken from the Facebook group. They are very responsive – like respond-to-you-within-the-hour responsive – if you post in the group.

Pantser? No Problem

So you may be thinking, cool, cool, cool, but I’m team pantser, I’d rather clean the litter box with my bare hands than sit down and plot out a book. Just give me a keyboard, and I’m good. Pantsers like to let the story unfold as they write and discover the characters and the plot along the way. I get it. I’m part pantser, part plotter myself. However, lately, I’ve been leaning more towards plotting before I write the story because it saves me from fixing an unwieldy saggy middle. One of those is enough, and hopefully, sit-ups will help with the first one. I’ve been using Plottr to reverse engineer my latest novel as I work on the second draft.

Reverse Engineer Your Story

Usually, I just edit as I write – which is painfully slow going, especially since I would just keep going over it until I was satisfied. Then came Scrivener, which allowed me to be more intentional with my structure. Now with Plottr, which can export to Scrivener, I’m going back over my story and plugging it into a three-act structure. They have various templates you can use for the timeline, including Michael Hauge’s Six Stage, Romancing the Beat, Jami Gold Romance, and more. If you are working on a series, it can keep your series ideas all in one place.

Revising Made Easy with Plottr

By writing one-line descriptions of my scenes in Plottr, I can track my inciting incident, plot points, and use tags to track the POVs. Basically, I can track whatever my little heart desires. I can set it up however I want. For this particular story, I took the scenes I had written in Scrivener and plugged them into Chapters and Acts (using the four-act structure) to make sure the pacing was on point. A visual look at the timeline let me know I’m on the right path. I could also see where additional scenes were needed and plugged them in. I then exported the outline to Scrivener and will begin revising the text because you can’t write your novel in Plottr – it is not a word processing tool. Its strength is in the ability to customize the timeline to create your plot, whether you do it before or after your story.

I also loved being able to customize my character template with the internal and external goals and the ability to add pictures. Makes my character sketch easy on the eyes visually.

But I Have XY&Z, Do I Really Need Plottr?

Times may be tight, with the pandemic and all. So do you need to buy another app? Probably not. I love buying writing apps almost as much as I love buying new notebooks. It’s my jam. Fellow notebook hoarders know what I’m talking about. But, if you are looking for an inexpensive tool to help you organize your story in an appealing way, I would definitely recommend giving Plottr. While it’s integration with Scrivener is not 100%, it doesn’t export the notes, it’s still helpful. I also like working in it without having all the baggage of the actual text of the book. A different platform helps me think about it differently, and it’s cleaner. They offer a free trial, so check it out.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about writing, reading about writing and planning to write these past few weeks. No substantial writing has actually taken place. I’m holding out hope that at some point, the words will just pour out of me, like some third act montage with an energetic soundtrack- and I will finish my novel. These are unusual times, and I guess that’s as likely to happen as anything else these days. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

I struggle to create as my mind flits from one idea to the next, never settling on any one thing as I filter news of the progress of COVID-19 and wonder if my cough means something. Then I’m down the rabbit hole of looking for testing sites, discovering I’m not eligible to be tested, and it’s back to my safe place on the couch binging.

In between all of that (and printing out drafts I have yet to read but am oddly comforted by), I’ve been reading about structure. I finished Three Story Method by J. Thorn with Zach Bohannon. They mentioned The Virgin’s Promise by Kim Hudson, which is the opposite of Joseph Campbell’s and later Chris Vogler’s The Hero’s Journey. To simplify it, the Hero’s Journey is more about saving the day while the Virgin’s Promise is about saving yourself by becoming who you were always meant to be.

Although I’m devout semi-pantser, I do recognize the value of structure and archetypes. I thought about the ways this structure could help flesh out the saggy middle of my novel.

Of course, things being what there are, this was no simple task to just attach the file and be done with it. If you are curious about where to find your Scrivener templates, I will save you the trouble. They are hidden. Mac hides its Library folder. You will need to go to your Finder, hold down Option and Go, and your Library folder will appear. You will find the templates in Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Project Templates. You should duplicate the file, save it in a non-hidden folder, and make it a zip file if you wish to share it.

When my daughter came home over Thanksgiving break, she came home bearing gifts. She had stumbled upon a machine in the Oakland Airport that offered free short stories. My first thought was, how cool is that? My second thought was, how I can be down and (third thought) why isn’t LAX doing this?

Basically, you tell the machine how long of a story you want – one minute, three minutes or five minutes, and it prints it out for you. According to the press release, the machine offers more than 9,000 authors with stories for both children and adults. The Airport, in a partnership with a French company, Short Édition, installed the on-demand short story dispensers on October 10, 2019 in both terminals, and distributed 2,000 stories in the first two weeks.

My daughter received a story in the Absurd Humor category by Makaila Keyes called, You Give Me Butterflies. You can read it here.

Short Édition accepts online submissions year-round and will select stories to appear on their website and in their dispensers. They pay $125 for each selected short story and $75 for each poem as an advance payment on the royalties that each author will receive on a yearly basis from the Short Story Dispenser subscriptions.

When I went to AWP this past March, I took part in a wonderful partnered reading event organized by Synchronized Chaos Magazine. They paired emerging and established authors to read. They had the established author write a response to a piece of work written by the emerging author. It was a very engaging evening.

We all know how hard it can be to get our books reviewed, and on the flip side, if you write reviews, where you do submit them?

Welp, Synchronized Chaos can help. They have set up a free review writing exchange to support the literary community. If you’re interested, they will send you a list of books in your favorite genres, and you pick one or two and write reviews of them.

They will work with you to research and place your review in higher-end literary magazines. They will look up magazines that are currently accepting book reviews and create a pitch letter and reach out to editors. They can also reach out to magazines that you know of if you’ve got a dream publication where you’d love to be published. So you get published and the author gets their book reviewed!
