I used to think Buzzfeed was just good for listicles and funny videos but oh has my opinion changed. In addition to the amazing recipes like this and this, I read an engrossing long-form journalism piece that was reminiscent of Vanity Fair in their heyday.
Expect to see more of this type of reporting and writing with Buzzfeed’s Emerging Writers Fellowship. It’s a four-month program where writers will receive career mentorship, editorial guidance and financial support in the amount of $12,000.
From their site:
The fellows will focus on personal essay writing, cultural reportage, and criticism. During their time in fellowship, writers will be expected to pitch, report, and write with the added benefit of panel discussions with editors and writers from throughout the industry, and assigned readings. Mentorship within the program will focus on teaching writers how to thrive as freelancers as well as on staff at media organizations; this mentorship will hopefully continue well after the fellowship itself is concluded.
Selected writers will be based out of either the NY or LA office. Deadline to apply is October 1, 2016 and winners will be notified January 2017.
